Making Fursuit Eye Blanks That Look Alive on Your Head Base
If you’ve ever looked at a finished fursuit head and thought the eyes felt alive, you were probably responding to the eye blanks more than the fur or markings. The blank sets the shape, angle, and depth. It’s the difference between a character who looks soft and curious and one who feels sharp or sleepy or mischievous. Before fur ever touches the base, the eye blanks are already deciding how that character will read from ten feet away across a noisy convention hallway.
When I make eye blanks, I start with the head base sitting right in front of me, not a flat drawing. Foam bases shift once they’re fully carved. Resin bases have their own symmetry quirks. Even 3D printed heads can warp slightly when padded and furred. If you design the blanks in isolation, they might look perfect on the table and completely off once installed. I like to tape paper templates directly onto the face and step back, squint, turn the head sideways, and check the angles the way someone will actually see it while you’re walking past them.
Most makers use EVA foam, plastic sheet, or 3D printed pieces for blanks. EVA is forgiving and easy to sand into subtle curves. You can heat shape it so it follows the brow line instead of sitting flat and lifeless. Plastic sheet gives you a crisper edge, which works well for toony styles with bold eyeliner shapes. 3D prints give precision and easy symmetry, but they can look too stiff if you don’t soften the edges or account for how fur will slightly crowd the eye opening.
The shape itself is only half the story. The depth matters just as much. A flat eye blank glued straight onto the surface can make the head feel mask-like. Building a slight inset, even a few millimeters, creates shadow around the edge and gives the illusion of a socket. Under convention center lighting, that shadow does a lot of work. Faux fur reflects differently depending on pile length and color. White fur around an eye can blow out under bright overhead lights, so a deeper set blank helps keep the expression readable.
Cutting the inner opening is where personality shows up. A rounder lower curve feels gentle. A sharper inner corner adds intensity. Even shaving one side a touch higher can change the entire mood. I usually cut the opening slightly smaller than I think I need, then test it with mesh installed. Once the mesh goes in, you realize how much visible space you lose from the inside. Wear the head, look through it in a mirror, and move around. Don’t just stand still. Visibility changes when you tilt your head or when the brow casts shadow.
For the sclera surface, many people use thin plastic or layered craft foam sealed smooth. What matters is that it’s clean and even. Any bumps will catch light and distract from the iris. I sand and seal until the surface feels almost like a smooth toy, not porous foam. Paint choice matters too. A slightly satin finish reads more natural than high gloss, which can glare under flash photography. At meets, someone will always take pictures with flash, and overly glossy eyes can turn into white disks.
The mesh is where maker and wearer really intersect. From the outside, you want the iris graphic crisp and centered. From the inside, you need airflow and enough visibility to safely navigate crowded dealer dens and uneven sidewalks. I prefer a mesh that balances opacity with breathability. Too dense and your vision drops fast once the head heats up. Too open and the eyes look washed out from a distance.
Position the mesh slightly behind the blank instead of flush with the front edge. That little recess hides your real eyes better and deepens the illusion. When you’re wearing paws and a tail and your movement gets more exaggerated because your field of vision narrows, the eye depth helps maintain character presence. People respond to where they think the character is looking. If the mesh is too close to the front, your real eye movement can break that illusion.
Installation is where small mistakes become permanent. Dry fit everything. Check symmetry from multiple angles. Walk away and come back. I’ve seen beautiful heads where one eye sits a few millimeters higher and you can’t unsee it once you notice. When gluing, be careful not to compress the foam base unevenly. Hot glue can sink soft foam if you press too hard, and that changes the angle.
Once the suit is worn for hours, things shift. Foam relaxes slightly from heat. Adhesives warm up. The interior lining might settle. That’s another reason to avoid making the eye opening too tight against the mesh. Give it breathing room. You’ll thank yourself three hours into a con day when you’re already managing heat, limited vision, and the way your head movements get a little more deliberate.
Maintenance is usually overlooked at the blank stage, but it matters. Make sure you can access the mesh for cleaning. After a long day, condensation builds up inside the head. Even with fans, moisture happens. Being able to gently wipe the back of the mesh without prying apart glued layers saves a lot of stress later. Eye blanks that are permanently sealed with no thought to cleaning often end up cloudy or warped after a few seasons.
Over time, you’ll notice how different eye styles behave in real environments. Large, high-contrast eyes pop in outdoor meets but can feel overwhelming in small indoor spaces. Narrower eyes photograph dramatically but reduce visibility if you’re not careful with mesh placement. The best blanks are the ones that respect both the character design and the physical reality of wearing the head in motion, in heat, in crowds.
When everything comes together, the blanks disappear into the character. You stop seeing plastic and foam and start seeing intent. From across the lobby, someone locks eyes with your suit and waves. That moment depends on a few carefully cut curves and a bit of thoughtful depth. Eye blanks are small pieces, but they carry a lot of weight.
